CU Hosting
List of Services Offered
- Disk space for web sites of academic and administrative offices of Cornell and for organizations sponsored by those offices. There is currently no disk-space limitation, but we do discourage large repositories, such as of images or of audio files, just as a courtesy to our other users.
- File space is divided into folders for a production web site on the standard port and folders for a testing web site at an alternate port.
- All user file spaces are backed up nightly.
- Server redundancy is provided to avoid disruption of web service, but full disruption can not be avoided (e.g., full power outage of machine room). During times of scheduled outages, such as server maintenance, users will be notified at least a week in advance, and maintenance will take place within regular off-hour windows as defined by CIT.
- Users are required to register their own host name with Cornell. Once the host names are registered, we can direct them to the CU Hosting machines to set up the hosted account. If users have a host name that is currently in use for a production site, we can provide a temporary host name for site set up.
- Access to the file space is currently provided through FTP. Users will receive a user name and password to access the account. Separate user accounts may be set up to restrict access to parts of a users site, but, in general, it is expected that the user take responsibility for the distribution of their user name and account password.
- Web scripting is provided through PHP. We also allow for CGI scripting in perl, on request.
- SSI is available on request. You will need to specify any special file extensions you require for this service.
- Authentication is available using Cornell's Kerberos system. File access may also be limited by IP address using Apache htaccess files. Users are free to implement their own htaccess files to restrict access to parts of their web site, but CU Hosting will provide help, if necessary, for those who can not.
- CU Hosting does not provide support for editing or creating code for web pages or web applications (e.g., HTML, PHP, CSS, JavaScript). CU Hosting also does not provide image-editing services. Users are expected to produce and maintain all content for their own web sites.
- On request, MySQL databases will be provided for scripting and data storage. Users will receive a user names and passwords to access their databases. CU Hosting will set up databases and provide access to databases and tables, but creation and maintenance of tables and data are the responsibility of the user. Users are also required to generate their own SQL code for their web application. If users wish to provide data in standard SQL dump-file format, we will upload this data into the user's database.
- CU Hosting provides web stats of your site usage, on request.
